Shangri-la Boracay opens its doors on March 2nd, Philippines
The Boracay resort has 183 rooms and 36 deluxe villas. The rooms feature ocean views from balconies, the villas got private pools and a whirlpool.
For March they offer deluxe rooms at a rate of 24000 Pesos per day : a new price/luxury dimension coming to Boracay !
Especially interesting is the 1350 square meter CHI spa. Boracay really doesn’t have superb massage/spa places yet. I am curious how the quality and design will be. Thailand and Indonesia in general certainly outperform Philippines in terms of spa/massage quality/skilled personal. The CHI spa group of the Shangri-la is one of the rare exceptions in the Philippines who might be able to keep up its high standard Asian-wide.
Boracay got more than 30 beaches, the longest/broadest and most well-known one is clearly „White Beach“. The Shangri-la is more secluded located at the beach in the north. If you like it secluded and luxurious, this hotel is for you.
I like it luxurious but I don’t like secluded locations, that’s why I will stay again at the Regency on my Boracay trip later this year which has the most central location on White Beach. Don’t underestimate the walking distances there, especially in the evening. However I will check out the Shangri-la and CHI spa of course. Last time I had been there in November 2007, I already took a closer look at the construction side.
With the opening of the Shangri-la on Boracay many things will change. Everyone knows it and they were big-time planning for it. It has advantages and disadvantages. Most locals are rather dissapointed. It means first of all that price levels will climb, a few small-type business operators will get pushed out of the market and the Shangri-la will use all its force to „clean up“ Boracay, making it more safe and transportation more reliable. I do cheer for the improvement of transportation, maybe lowering rip-offs and getting things handled more efficient, Thai-style touristic like.
I am personally not afraid of the price-level rise, which will happen without doubt. I am more worried of the kind of people, tourists coming to this place. If those boring usual Bali/Phuket family travellers go there, of course they will restructure the activities, restaurants and hotels for this new and affluent tourist group. The cheap flights with Korean Air to the Philippines already did a lot of „damage“ to the atmosphere of this place.
The hardcore travellers are more into places like Palawan Islands anyway and it could speed up the trend of the more frequent Philippines travellers to make it out there. I myself will check that area out in 2010. I however am not a big fan of too lonely places for a longer time, that’s why Boracay will most likely remain the most important island for me on the Philippines.
I am quiet sure that the Shangri-la Boracay will become a success long-term, although the price level is far above the rest of the current upper class resorts.
