Same Same But Different - The Movie
On January 21st the movie is coming to German theaters. It looks interesting. Here is a teaser, so far existing only in German, from the offcial website :
“A journey from the heart of darkness to the heart of lightness.”
“It was just one night after the club. It became tender love. And suddenly a matter of survival.
SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT tells an unusual, modern love story. A young German falls for a Cambodian girl and stays by her side, even though she is HIV positive. Based on the true story of Benjamin Prüfer and Sreykeo Sorvan.”

“The unexpected and uncertain love story of Sreykeo, a 21 year old bar girl in Phnom Penh and Ben, a young German student traveling to Cambodia on a post graduation summer trip. When Ben returns home to Germany he discovers that Sreyko is sick and he takes on the responsibility to save her. On the way he discovers a world where not everyone is dealt the same cards and where motivations are not always pure”.

Hi Joana,
I am not sure if they plan to bring out a Spanish version. So far the movie only exists in German.
I just watched it last weekend at a Potsdamer Place cinema. The actors that got casted are really good and they even managed to get Rammstein for a song.
However the way they tell the story is weak. They only scratch on the surface and many good ideas (that most likely got stolen together anyway and are not part of the original trip report) are not being followed thoroughly.
I still think that the first part of Xavier Durringer’s “Lady Bar” is the best movie about relations between westerners and SEA bargirls.
What I dislike most is the moral forefinger, trying to directly link bargirls with HIV. The entire movie crew don’t seem to have travelled much within SEA anyway and you feel that they don’t understand many issues themselves. They just pick up some spots and ideas…
Well you know what I believe about HIV infections anyway : IT CANNOT GET TRANSMITTED BY NORMAL HETEROSEXUAL SEX.
My own studies in Pattaya and Angeles City prove that. Better ask someone with knowledge, facts and real studies instead of believing what TV, newspaper and other manipulated media tells you….
